This is a great insight into the close-knit nature of Manchester’s creative/digital/social sectors and something I’m glad to be part of.

Many who have come from other cities (especially those from down south) claim there’s nothing there that rival the social events that take place in Manchester, which is one reason I’m thankful for living/working here. There’s something for everyone.

Definitely looking forward to more events taking place in the near future.

Well said, Abid! I also feel very lucky and happy to be living in Manchester and to be taking part in so many of those events.
(And by the way, my forgetfulness is senility-related, please excuse me and don’t take it personally! :p)

    Hi Maria

Northern Soho is totally independant – and is a collaberative group of people who work in the creative industries. I guess you could put us in the same vein as Northern Digitals and CING? Hope to see you there sometime. Sarah

Hi Maria, good piece of work, I will be point a lot of my enquiries as to SM scene in Manchester to this Blog Post.

    keep me updated

    Tony

    • Dr. Maria Aretoulaki October 12, 2010 at 6:32 pm #

Thanks Tony! I hope the post will prove useful to newcomers to the scene.

  4. Nigel Barlow September 17, 2010 at 8:17 pm #

Excellent round up of the Manchester Social media scene.

Maybe you could also include us at Inside the M60 and our use of Social media to build brand and presence providing an alternative news site for Manchester

    http://insidethem60.journallocal.co.uk/

    • Dr. Maria Aretoulaki September 18, 2010 at 1:33 pm #

Many thanks for the compliments Nigel! My list is of Social Media organisations and meetups, rather than individual blogs, which I know are hundreds! If I get more requests for links to individual blogs and news portals, I will add a dedicated section and definitely include Inside the M60 as well. I hope this makes sense??

    Hi
    just a clarification

MDDA is part of Manchester City Council and is responsible for the city’s digital strategy. Our webiste is http://www.manchesterdda.com

One of the organisation’s we support is Manchester Digital (www.manchesterdigital.com) who are the independent trade association for digital and new media in the city. We act as secretariat for this, some of their meetings take place at our offices, and we have a seat on the council. It is Manchester Digital that is the membership organisation and has a fee structure.

    • Dr. Maria Aretoulaki September 17, 2010 at 5:07 pm #

Apologies for this inaccuracy, Adrian! I have just corrected the corresponding entry!

      • Adrian Slatcher September 17, 2010 at 9:28 pm #

You’re not the first! Very comprehensive post, may save me a lot of time explaining this to people in the future.

      • Dr. Maria Aretoulaki September 18, 2010 at 1:20 pm #

I’m glad we’ve cleared that up now! :)
Yes, let’s hope that through this and similar posts, more people will become aware of all the many different possibilities to network, cooperate and create in Manchester!

I need to get out more. I might create a digital meet up for parents with young children

    • Dr. Maria Aretoulaki September 17, 2010 at 1:05 pm #

DO IT!!! Imagine the endless free babysitting / babyswapping (!) possibilities! :D

  7. Julian Tait September 15, 2010 at 8:53 pm #

    Hiya Maria,

#smc_mcr was set up by myself @julianlstar, Martin Bryant @MartinSFP and Sarah Hartley @foodiesarah back in November 2008 as there wasn’t really anything similar around. It has a pretty amorphous structure and anyone can pitch up and input into the direction it goes. Josh @technicalfault has been driving things fantastically over the past few months and as always we welcome people who want to help run it

    • Dr. Maria Aretoulaki September 16, 2010 at 5:02 pm #

Profuse apologies, Julian!! Josh also immediately rushed to correct me there! (see his comment below / above). I have now fully rectified the #smc_mcr entry and hope to be absolved! :D

By the way, for the record, I have actually played at the then FutureSonic Festival in 2007, thanks to Caro Snatch’ successful funding application and winning place in the EVNTS section! :) Wonderful memories!!

  8. Alistair Beech September 15, 2010 at 8:24 pm #

    An excellent read.

An incredible amount of hard work has gone into these Digital / SM organisation and outlets.

All of the above should be applauded for contributing to Manchester’s considerable online -> offline community – in my opinion the liveliest of its kind in the UK.

    • Dr. Maria Aretoulaki September 17, 2010 at 4:55 pm #

Many thanks for the compliment, Alistair!

I definitely second your opinion about the liveliness of the Manchester digital community!

  9. Jonathan Hopkins September 15, 2010 at 2:22 pm #

Great read Maria. Can I just add that for anyone who might be interesting, the next Manchester Blog meet is on the 30th of September. More details can be found here: http://bit.ly/cPyBWc

    • Jonno September 16, 2010 at 7:00 pm #

Yes, I did actually mean interesting. No borings.

    • Dr. Maria Aretoulaki September 17, 2010 at 12:59 pm #

Cheers for the reminder, Jonno! Fatroland had mentioned that he was planning an event on the 30th. I have now updated the post with links to the next Blogmeet event (and to you!) :)

  10. Steven Flower September 15, 2010 at 1:48 pm #

Don’t forget @hwayoung at the MadLab!

Plus – our Manchester Net Tuesday has been meeting monthly all of 2010 – http://www.meetup.com/The-Manchester-NetSquared-Meetup-Group/

And Manchester Free Software is long standing and active – http://libreplanet.org/wiki/Manchester

    • Dr. Maria Aretoulaki September 16, 2010 at 5:37 pm #

Many thanks for this, Steven! I have now added both Hwa and these two groups, but yeah there are so many meetups taking place at MadLab! I wasn’t ever going to list all of them for fear of missing at least as many I don’t know about! MadLab is such as open and dynamic place :)

      Thanks again!

      • Steven Flower September 20, 2010 at 3:07 pm #

No worries. Maybe we need a Lanyrd.com for manchester, or maybe that already exists!

      • Dr. Maria Aretoulaki September 20, 2010 at 3:49 pm #

        Interesting concept, this Lanyrd site!

  11. Josh September 15, 2010 at 1:04 pm #

Great article! Just wanted to flag up – the founders of #smc_mcr are @julianlstar @foodiesarah and @martinsfp. I help out running it with Julian and Martin, now that some people have moved on.

However, everyone can get involved – it’s a real community event!

  12. Mark Whitfield September 15, 2010 at 8:46 am #

With reference to the above Social Media Scene article, my name is Mark Whitfield and I work as an IT Manager very close to the Peel MediaCityUK development in Salford Quays. I have worked in the Quays for 15 years (just off Broadway). I lived for 32 years in Leigh and now live in North Bolton.

Over the last 3.5 years, I have been taking photographs of the Peel MediaCityUK build (since May 2007) and publishing them online at http://www.mediacityuksalfordquays.net/mcuk.htm .

There are currently 15,500 pictures and the link will always redirect to the current month. The MediaCityUK Photographic Timeline Journal also contains links to other related sites which may prove interesting.

Coupled with this initiative, 3 years ago I started a MediaCityUK, BBC North, University of Salford and Salford Quays group on the FREE Professional Networking site, LINKEDIN. This group currently has 1880+ members and is growing fast. The group contains the latest official news, jobs and discussions surrounding the development and allows registered members to keep an eye on ALL things MediaCityUK.

The group is located at the following link: http://www.linkedin.com/groups?mostPopular=&gid=79227

Hope these links help and if you need any more information, please email me at my website below.

    Best Regards

Mark Whitfield (IT Manager, Salford Quays, Broadway)

    • Dr. Maria Aretoulaki September 15, 2010 at 11:01 am #

      Thanks for this Mark.

Of course the whole MediaCityUK project has been pivotal in the development of Manchester as a whole and by extension to its Social Media scene.

I am already a member of your LinkedIn group and have also been following the photographic timeline journal for several months now. Really exciting!

      • cashew October 11, 2010 at 4:40 pm #

Hi Maria – this is a great list of most of Manchesters social media related meetups – I have a few more to add!

http://www.meetup.com/northernsoho @northernsoho – is an agency collaberative to raise the profile of our regions creative talents directly with client side marketeers – lets get a greater share of client purse up here rather than them heading to London.
We are also on Linkedin and facebook (just search Northern Soho)

There are a few tickets left for our panel event on Thursday as part of the In The City festival – and featured amongst the panel of brand and music experts is Trevor Cairns, CMO of Umbro.

Also you have @gastroclub_mcr #gastroclub – an underground group of foodies organised by Katie Brunt – its gathering pace month by month and each month Katie organises a new venue that creates a special menu for us the more adventurous of us to try! So far we’ve had Squirrel, a bird within a bird (13 different birds) and jellyfish and chickens feet. Next one is tomorrow.

Anyway, thats all from me – just thought I would add these two to the mix.

      • Dr. Maria Aretoulaki October 11, 2010 at 10:18 pm #

        Thanks for your comment.

I have heard of Northern Soho but I still don’t understand what it is. Not having yet attended an event doesn’t help either! Please note that I have listed INDEPENDENT organisations and meetups, I don’t want to add any agency-centric meetups, because then this will end up to be a marketing brochure and I would hate the idea! I promise to check out one of the events asap and if the meetup fits this list I will certainly add it.

The Gastroclub also sounds interesting but it’s not relevant for this blog post. The list I have compiled is about Meetups and independent organisations focusing on Social Media technologies, not on social gatherings in general. I hope I have cleared things up a bit!
